Visitors to Szentes can enjoy a truly enriching cultural experience by attending a current performance at the József Tóth Theater and Vigadó. However, the building’s unparalleled beauty is sure to impress not only theatergoers but also architecture enthusiasts. The Petőfi Hotel and Vigadó, a Hungarian Art Nouveau-style building located on Szentes’s main square and constructed between 1897 and 1899, was designed by Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, two of the leading architects of Hungarian Art Nouveau. The theater hall was named after József Tóth (1823–1870), an actor and distinguished native of Szentes. Theater director Orsolya Kancsár described the theater hall located within the Petőfi Hotel and Vigadó building as a “dreamlike little gem,” capable of seating at 368 spectators. It features boxes, revolving seats, an orchestra pit, and a fly loft. Following the renovation completed in 2021, it can be said that the Szentes theater is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
