Art Nouveau cemetery chapel

In the spring of 1908, the widow of István Rekettyés established a foundation at the Roman Catholic Church in Szentes to have a chapel built in the Kálvária cemetery. The design competition organised by the parish council was won by István Bene Jr, an architect from Szentes. The building, featuring a tower, a pyramidal-roof nave and semi-domed transept apses, was completed by the end of the year. The installation of the bell, the altar and the interior furnishings were only completed years later, funded by donations. The Art Nouveau architectural features and wall surfaces of the cemetery chapel are graceful, creating a striking impression from all sides amidst the gravestones.
